1mm vs 0.8mm Laminate: Which Thickness Is Right for Your Home

The thickness of a laminate decides where it works best. Here is how 1mm and 0.8mm decorative laminate differ in practice — and a simple rule for choosing between the Artis 1MM line and the 0.8mm Woodrica and Artvio lines.

What 1mm laminate is

A 1mm decorative laminate is the thicker, more substantial sheet — in our range, the premium Artis 1MM line, including the Synchro designs where the printed pattern and the surface texture move together. The extra body gives a deeper, more tactile surface and a little more material where a surface is handled, knocked or wiped down many times a day.

It is the choice for the surfaces that take the most life: kitchen counters and high-use horizontal tops, the main door, and feature walls you want to read as solid and considered.

What 0.8mm laminate is

An 0.8mm decorative laminate is the lighter, more versatile everyday sheet — our Woodrica and Artvio lines. It is easier to handle and to hang, which matters most on tall wardrobe shutters and vertical panels where weight and balance on the hinges count.

It carries the same wide range of wood, marble, solid and abstract looks, so for most cabinetry, shutters and panelling the 0.8mm lines do everything you need at a lighter, more economical weight.

Do they differ in durability?

Both the Artis 1MM line and the 0.8mm Woodrica and Artvio lines are genuine high-pressure decorative laminates (HPL) made to the same Indian Standard — IS:2046-1995 Type S, ISI-licensed and phenolic. That means both carry the same documented surface, heat, impact, scratch and stain resistances; the difference is body, not grade.

The thicker 1mm sheet simply gives more material to work with where a surface is handled hardest, which is why it is preferred on counters and doors — not because the 0.8mm is any less of a true HPL.

Which should you choose?

Match thickness to wear. Use the 1mm Artis 1MM line where a surface is handled hardest and you want it to feel substantial — kitchen counters, the main door, a headboard or feature wall. Use the 0.8mm Woodrica or Artvio lines for everything that mainly needs to look right and stay light — wardrobe shutters, cabinet fronts and wall panels. A common, sensible kitchen does both: 1mm on the counter, 0.8mm on the shutters.

Frequently asked questions

Not better — thicker. Both the Artis 1MM (1mm) line and Woodrica/Artvio (0.8mm) are genuine HPL to IS:2046 Type S with the same documented resistances. The 1mm has more body for surfaces handled hardest — counters, doors — while 0.8mm is lighter and ideal for shutters and panels. Match thickness to wear, not to a quality ranking.

Use 1mm Artis 1MM on the countertop and any high-use horizontal top, where heat, water and knocks are hardest, and 0.8mm Woodrica or Artvio on the cabinet shutters and vertical panels, where lightness helps. Many kitchens sensibly combine both thicknesses.

0.8mm Woodrica or Artvio — the lighter sheet keeps tall doors easy to hang and balance on their hinges. The 1mm line is available across most designs too if a door takes especially heavy daily use, but for most wardrobes 0.8mm is the right call.

Yes. Woodrica and Artvio at 0.8mm are full high-pressure laminates made to IS:2046-1995 Type S — ISI-licensed and phenolic, the same standard as the 1mm line. They are the everyday workhorse for shutters, panels and most cabinetry; the 1mm line simply adds body for the highest-wear surfaces.

The Artis 1MM line is a full 1mm (1.0mm) body — our premium tier, including the Synchro range where the design and the surface texture move together. Woodrica and Artvio are the 0.8mm lines.
